Lintels & window supports

Why lintels fail

A lintel carries the weight of the brickwork above a window or door. Older concrete lintels can crack, and steel lintels can rust and expand, pushing bricks out of line. Some older properties have no proper lintel at all. Left untreated, the brickwork above the opening can drop, crack or eventually collapse.

Signs you may need structural work

Stepped or diagonal cracks above windows or doors
Sagging or bowed brickwork over an opening
Windows or doors that have started to stick
Rust staining or bulging around a steel lintel
Cracked or crumbling concrete lintels
